On this day of my sons 25th birthday it seems fitting to tell you the story/thought behind naming my bakery GingerKakes.
My son John had trouble saying Kayleigh when he was little, it came out as Kiki. It kind of stuck with all of us but over time my husband, John, morphed Kiki into Kakes. Hence the capitol "K" in GingerKakes.
About 20 years ago we where having new carpet installed in our living room by a former classmate of mine named Ed. At one point Ed very seriously looked at me and said "Can I ask you what your son's name is?" I told him that we call him John Andrew around the house. Ed chuckled and said " I thought your daughter called him Ginger! She said his name so fast that is what it sounded like." Whether Kayleigh over heard Ed or she heard me telling my husband later, I am not sure but she heard it and started calling John Andrew, Ginger from time to time.
Since I started doing dairy free baking due to my sons allergy to milk, something he had from birth, I knew that I wanted to honor him in some way with the name of my bakery. It was to Kayleigh's urging, for years, that I even started on this venture so I felt I needed to represent her as well. I played around with many names before deciding on GingerKakes.
On an interesting note, if you have seen my business cards, the font I chose to use is named "John Andrew" ! How perfect is that! :-)
